Polvorón / Traditional Spanish Christmas sweet.
// By Pilar Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

A polvoron is a type of heavy, soft and very crumbly Spanish shortbread, usually small, made of flour, lard and powdered sugar. Also, you can add others ingredients like white wine, anise, nuts and grated rind of lemon or orange. It is a typical sweet of Christmas in Spain. Ñammm, ¡Rico, rico!
Last year, I cooked "polvorones" to bring them to JACis, youth center where I was a volunteer. Here some pictures about the preparation process and the result. Yummy, yummy!
Receta para 20-25 polvorones (Nevaditos)
400 gr harina
200 gr manteca de cerdo
100 ml vino blanco
Almendra picada
Azúcar glass
Elaboracion:

Recipe for 20-25 polvorones (Nevaditos)
400 gr flour
200 gr pork lard
100 ml white wine
Chopped almonds
Powdered sugar

Preparation:
Firstly, extending the flour on the baking sheet and toasting for about 7-10 minutes at 170 ° C.
When the flour is lightly toasted, sieving it with a sieve in a bowl and then adding the white wine and stiring. (Also, if you want, you can add a pinch of salt and sugar)

Adding the pork lard, previously melted in a casserole over low heat, to the flour and white wine mixture. Stiring  with a spoon and adding the chopped almonds. If you see that the dough is sticky, you can add a little more of flour and mix.

On a table, extending a little of flour and kneading the dough until the ingredients are well combined.
Making circles in the dough and put on the baking sheet. Baking at 175 ° C for 25-30 minutes.
When the polvorones are ready, let them cool and to add the powdered sugar on top. Be careful because polvorones are soft and can break easily :)))

Moreover, I prepared these polvoron packages to collaborate in a small charity market organized by Orthodox church in Rezekne. People liked them!!

18 November, Independence Day of Latvia / 18 de Noviembre, Día de la Independencia Letona
// By Pilar Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

Today is a really important date on the Latvian calendar, the Independence of Latvia was proclaimed on 18 November 1918.

"Even though there were no borders set, a group of dedicated nationalists proclaimed an independent Latvian state on this date in 1918. Several months after this courageous step had been made, military interventions still went on — the Russian Empire did not want to lose this important territory. Nevertheless, this day is still the most important national holiday for every Latvian."

We feel Latvia in our heart. Even if we are so far away from Latvia, we are with Latvia on this important day of celebration!

Letonas y españolas / Latvians and Spanish
// By Carmen Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

1.¿Cómo y cuándo empezaste a aprender español?
4. Tu palabra y comida favorita en Español :)

En mi caso en Letonia:
1. Empecé a estudiar Letón hace 11 meses gracias a mi proyecto de voluntariado europeo.

3. Me gustaría visitar Cesis y Sigulda.

Sandra Talapina

1. Empece a estudiar español hace 7-8 años por mi misma y con ayuda de los libros y la página web busuu.com;

3. Me gustaria visitar las ciudades y los regiones mas autenticos de Espana, aquellos lugares que aun son viejos y llenos de cosas historicas,no modernas. Tambien me gustaria volver a Barcelona para terminar mi visito al objetos turisticos que no he visto en mi primer viaje;

Trajes tradicionales Letones/ Traditional Latvian costumes
// By Pilar Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

Līgo and Jānis day celebrations in Latvia
// By Pilar Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

Foto and references: Latvia.travel
In Latvia the celebration of the summer solstice festival, or Jani, remains the most ancient and beloved holiday, marked with great enthusiasm throughout the country.
It is a celebration unique in Europe.
Celebrations typically kick off on June 22, continuing with Ligo-Day on June 23 and Jani the following day 's June 24th.

According to ancient tradition, the shortest night of the year must be spent by staying awake all night by the glow of the bonfire singing sons, dancing, drinking beer, jumping over fires...waiting for the sunrise. The belief is that those who go to sleep before sunrise on Jāņi will be sleepy all summer long.

After we made two bodies, we needed more fabric, again we went to sencond hand and we found two flower curtains, 1,57€ each one and they had details with lace, perfect!

After this hard work, we were strong to add some details to the dress and the sleeves, add a detail in the neckline, we put velcro on the back instead of zipper :).
Step by step we achieved it, so motivated to see the result! You will see it...

// By Pilar Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

Today, we are going on excursion! I am going to show you the beautiful landscape that you can see walking along the river Rezekne in Rezekne, forgive the repetition :)
The weather was perfect, so the four EVS volunteers of JACis, Prokop, Giorgi, Lyuci and me (Pilar), we went in search of the 12 bridges there are in the city. Yes, you have read well, I wasn't wrong writing the number "one" hehe, twelve bridges!

Preparados...listos...¡Ya!

Part I: DIY "Andalusian costume" 100% Handmade/ Parte I: DIY "Traje Andaluz" Hecho a mano 100%
// By Carmen Encuentra // Be the first to comment!

If in Rezekne is going to take place the Seven Hills Festival and in the program there is a Statues-contest promenade, so it is the best moment to show the Spanish culture in a original way in a foreing country.
Our brain started to work and we had the idea to be Andalusian statues :). The idea was great, but how to do it? it wasn´t easy...
On 12nd May we filled in the inscription with our names, the name of the statue and the sketches of our costumes. We call our statue "Joy of life", formed by we, Carmen and Pilar, and Kike from Santander, also spanish EVS in Rezekne.

Creativa Atelier and La Hilandera.

For Kike was easy to dress up, a trousers, a shirt, a hat, a guitar. For the flamenca dress we had a big challenge!
We love big challenges, so we said us "we can do it". If we filled in the inscription like two weeks before the day of the event, we started to prepare the costume four or five days before...
We searched tutorials in blogs and we watched videos "How to make a flamenca dress?" and we found a great blogs where we could get inspiration and find help to start our dress, as Creativa Atelier and La Hilandera.

We had a very good idea, we wanted a dress with sleeves and frills with circular ruffles, and that is how we get it :)

Here you can see a little bit of our hard work in the dresses!
In other post we will tell you more and we will show you the final result!
